Adding a note to an order

Is it possible to add a note to an order that the customer cannot see? Eg to explain why it is currently pending.

When you go to one of your orders inside the dashboard, there should be a comment box below the order details section. If you uncheck the “Send this comment to the customer by email automatically” the customer won’t be notified:
